Living Here

What We Offer

Abbot's Hospital offers up to 27 residents the opportunity to live an independent, fulfilled life in the very centre of town.

We provide a sociable and supportive environment for our residents, emphasising this sense of community through a range of regular social activities, including coffee mornings, keep fit classes and occasional outings. Many of our residents assist with guided tours, bake cakes for different activities, help in the garden and host social events.

All our accommodation is self contained and has been upgraded to meet all the required standards for comfortable elderly living. Improvements have included walk-in shower facilities and fully fitted kitchens. Residents may be visited each day by the Warden and 24 hour emergency cover is provided by means of a supported call system.

Originally Abbot's accommodated only single people but a new block, built within the grounds in 1984, made it possible for couples to move into the Hospital in the Upper Courtyard area. In total we have 12 single-occupancy flats and 8 'couples' terraced houses.

Included below are some photographs of one of our single-occupancy flats. They come as 'unfurnished flats' but they are spacious, well-presented and have some nice views.

How To Apply

If you, or someone you know, would like to apply to live at the Hospital you will usually need to have been born in the Borough of Guildford and then lived in the Borough of Guildford for 20 years or lived in the Borough of Guildford for 2 years immediately prior to being offered residency. Out of area applications are permitted but there is a limit to the number of residents from out of area at any one time. No more than one-third of total residents can be from out of area. Applicants should be at least 60 years of age (or in the case of a couple, one person should be at least 60 years old) and they should be of modest financial means (which means 'capable of claiming for Housing Benefit') and they should be in sufficiently good health to be capable of 'independent living'. The Master, Michael McKechnie, would be pleased to discuss eligibility for residence with individuals or couples and their relatives. For further information please contact:
